Private William Robert Henry Crozier

William Robert Henry Crozier was born on 13 April 1888 at Kinglass, Enniskillen, County Fermanagh, the first of four children of farmer Robert Crozier and his wife Margaret (nee Moore). By the time of the 1911 Census he was living with his parents and siblings at Crocknacreevy, Kinglass, and working on the family farm.

Crozier enlisted in the North Irish Horse between 29 October and 16 November 1912 (No.756). On 1 May 1915 he embarked for France with D Squadron, which at the time was serving as divisional cavalry to the 51st Division.

In May 1916 D Squadron came together with A and E Squadrons to form the 1st North Irish Horse Regiment, serving as corps cavalry to VII, XIX, then V Corps. In September 1917 the 2nd North Irish Horse Regiment was disbanded and its men, together with some surplus to the needs of the 1st NIH Regiment, were transferred to the infantry. Like most, Crozier joined the 9th (Service) Battalion, Royal Irish Fusiliers – renamed the 9th (North Irish Horse) Battalion – on 20 September. He was issued regimental number 41390.

Crozier was seriously wounded in his left leg during the fighting for the village of Moeuvres on 23 or 24 November 1917 in the initial phase of the Battle of Cambrai. He was admitted to the 18th General Hospital at Camiers soon after, remaining there until the end of December.

Whether Crozier returned to his battalion at the front is not known at present. On 8 March 1919 he was demobilised and transferred to Class Z, Army Reserve.
